Best PLA Filament for AMS-Compatible Printers (2026) — Forgely PLA Tested on A1, P1S, and X1C
If you run an AMS-equipped printer, the filament question comes down to one trade: stay locked to the RFID ecosystem and pay the premium, or run a third-party PLA and accept a one-time slicer profile setup. We spent the last month running Forgely Performance PLA through an A1, a P1S, and an X1C, with 500+ AMS swaps, a couple of failed prints we caused on purpose, and a control set for comparison.
Here's what we found.
Quick answer: what works best on AMS printers
Forgely Performance PLA 1.75mm runs cleanly on every current AMS-compatible printer we tested. The spool dimensions (200mm OD, 55mm width, 53mm bore) fit the AMS and the AMS Lite without shims or rewinding. Default temps in the Generic PLA preset, 215°C nozzle and 60°C bed, work as the starting point on all three machines.
No RFID auto-detect, since that's a feature reserved for the printer maker's own spools. You select Generic PLA once per spool, save it as a preset, and move on. The filament is made in Utah, ships in solid and translucent finishes, and is Bambu AMS compatible.
The short version: load it as Generic PLA, leave the rest of your calibration alone, and print.
How we tested: A1, P1S, and X1C across the AMS
Three printers ran in rotation for four weeks. The A1 covered the AMS Lite path; the P1S and X1C both ran the full AMS. We pulled test files most makers will recognize: 3DBenchy, a 0.2mm calibration cube, a Voron tap for functional load behavior, and a four-color logo plate to stress the AMS swap mechanism.
We measured first-layer adhesion, dimensional accuracy on the cube, stringing at 215°C, 220°C, and 225°C, AMS feed and retract cycles to look for grinding, and color consistency across multiple spools of the same SKU. A matte black PLA from the printer maker's own brand served as the control, since that's the spool most owners have already calibrated against.
A1 and A1 mini: filament picks and slicer notes
The A1's direct-drive extruder is the most forgiving setup for PLA. Forgely's 1.75mm filament holds a ±0.03mm tolerance across the spool, which sits well inside what the A1's extruder can swallow without skips.
The AMS Lite has a more exposed feed path than the full AMS, so winding quality matters more here. We didn't see crossed loops or tangle stops in the spools we ran, but if you're new to third-party filament on an AMS Lite, hand-feed the first half-meter so you can watch the path.
For slicer settings, load Forgely as Generic PLA and cap max volumetric speed at 21 mm³/s for the A1's hotend.

P1S: AMS reliability and enclosed-chamber notes
The P1S is the prosumer sweet spot, and the enclosed chamber changes how PLA behaves in two small ways. First, ambient temperature creeps up during long prints, which can encourage elephant's foot. We drop the bed from 60°C to 55°C after layer 5 and that fixes it. Second, the higher chamber temp gives slightly cleaner overhangs at the cost of a touch more stringing, so leave retraction at the default and don't chase it.
The AMS reliability test was the one we cared about most. Across four print sessions and 500+ filament swaps, we logged zero feed failures on Forgely spools. The grind marks we'd expect from a marginal extruder gear interaction never showed up.
The RFID gap is the only real friction. The slicer prompts "unknown filament" when you load a third-party spool. Select Generic PLA, set the color manually, save the preset, and the prompt stops bothering you on that slot.
You don't need a hardened nozzle for Forgely PLA, since PLA isn't abrasive. If you've already upgraded for PLA-CF or PETG-CF, standard PLA still runs cleanly at 215°C through the hardened tip. Our safe printing temperatures guide walks through what changes when you push beyond PLA.
X1C: pushing speed and multi-color reliability
The X1C is where you can lean on the printer. The lidar first-layer scan reads Forgely PLA without calibration quirks: no false-positive warnings, no aborted starts across the prints we ran.
We pushed max volumetric speed to 24 mm³/s and saw no under-extrusion, even on translucent colors where flow consistency matters more. The multi-color test was the headline result: a four-spool AMS load with 80+ filament swaps in a single print, finished clean, no jams.
For functional parts that need real toughness, PLA isn't the answer regardless of brand. Pair the X1C with our PETG slicer settings guide instead. AMS compatibility: spool dimensions, RFID, and refills
This is the question we get most often, so here's the short version with the spec numbers.
The AMS accepts spools up to 200mm outside diameter, 68mm width, with a 53mm bore. Forgely's spools land at 200 × 55 × 53mm: a few millimeters of clearance on the width, and the OD hits the spec exactly. They drop into both the AMS and the AMS Lite without modification.
RFID auto-detect is a branded feature; third-party filament requires a one-time manual profile selection. Select Generic PLA on first load, save it to that slot, and the AMS will remember.

One AMS-specific note on humidity: Forgely PLA ships vacuum-sealed with desiccant. The AMS isn't a dry box, so if you're in a humid climate, reseal partially-used spools between sessions or move them to a dedicated dry storage container.
Slicer profile: starting settings
Here's the copy-paste config we use as a starting point. It works as-is on all three printers; tweak from here if your specific environment asks for it.
- Filament type: Generic PLA
- Nozzle temp: 215°C (first layer 220°C)
- Bed temp: 60°C (first layer 65°C)
- Max volumetric speed: 21 mm³/s on the A1, 22 mm³/s on the P1S, 24 mm³/s on the X1C
- Retraction: 0.8mm at 30 mm/s (direct-drive default)
- Fan: 100% from layer 3
- Pressure advance: leave the default calibration; no override needed
If you're in a colder shop, bump first-layer bed temp to 70°C and stop there.
When Forgely PLA isn't the right pick
We don't think every project should run on PLA, and that includes ours.
Outdoor parts, in-car holders, or anything that lives in a hot garage will deform, since PLA softens around 60°C. Choose PETG or ASA for that work instead. Functional parts that take repeated load, like gears, hinges, or load-bearing brackets, hold up better in PETG; PLA fatigues faster under cyclic stress.

If RFID auto-loading is the feature you bought your printer for, stay on the brand's own basic line. It's a fine filament. The trade is price and color range, but if your workflow is "scan, load, print" without ever opening slicer settings, the branded spool is the right tool.
Color and finish picks AMS owners reach for most
These are the SKUs that move fastest with the AMS crowd, based on our own order data.
