FDM mini printing in 2026 is genuinely good. Not "good for plastic toys" good — actually good. A modern direct-drive printer with a 0.2mm nozzle and a 0.08mm layer height will hold faces, chainmail, and leather straps clean enough that most tabletop players can't tell it from resin under three feet of light.

The catch: the printer gets most of the credit, but the PLA itself decides whether your 28mm sergeant has eyes or pudding. Three variables actually move the needle for minis: pigment opacity, surface finish, and flow consistency at very low layer heights. Brand and finish matter more than the marketing makes obvious.

This post compares standard PLA, PLA+, matte, silk, and translucent PLA specifically for tabletop minis. You'll get settings, honest counter-recommendations (silk PLA, for instance, is mostly a trap), and the Forgely PLA SKUs that map to each use case.

Why PLA Type Matters for Minis (Not Just Printer)

People assume a better printer fixes everything. It doesn't. Three things about the filament itself dictate how a 28mm face comes out.

Pigment load. Heavily pigmented PLA (think a saturated red or black) flows differently than a lightly tinted or natural blend at 0.08mm layers. Dense pigment can slightly stiffen the melt, which on a 0.2mm nozzle shows up as occasional under-extrusion on sharp features. Lighter pigments are more forgiving at small layer heights.

Surface finish. Glossy PLA reflects light along the print direction, which means every micro-step in your layer stack catches a highlight and your eye reads it as banding. Matte additives scatter that light. Same geometry, same layer height, different visual outcome.

Toughness vs detail tradeoff. PLA+ blends add impact resilience by introducing a small amount of elastomer. That elasticity slightly softens sharp edges: cloak hems, weapon tips, fingernails. Useful for tabletop survival, not free.

No ABS or PETG here, deliberately. Warp at mini scale ruins basing, and PETG strings catastrophically on the 1-2mm features minis are made of. PLA's brittleness is the lesser problem.

Standard PLA: The Workhorse for Rank-and-File

If you're printing ten skeletons or twenty cultists, standard PLA is the right answer. Not "good enough," actually correct.

Strengths: cheapest per-mini cost, widest color range, easiest profile to dial in. A 1kg spool prints roughly 200 28mm troops with standard infill, so your per-mini material cost lands around five cents.

Weaknesses: the surface is shiny pre-prime, which makes layer lines look worse than they actually are before you put any paint on. And thin sticky-out bits (spear shafts, antennae, banner poles) snap if a cat looks at them sideways.

Forgely pick: Forgely PLA in your faction color. Print everything in roughly the right hue so you can sanity-check geometry before paint. Forgely PLA Orange is our most popular base-and-terrain color for exactly this reason: orange shows misprints loudly.

PLA+: When You Need Toughness Without Going to ABS

"PLA+" is a marketing label, not a chemistry standard. Every brand means something slightly different: usually a toughening additive, sometimes a nucleating agent, occasionally just regular PLA with a sticker.

Where it earns its keep: minis with thin protrusions that get handled often. Standard-bearer banners, antennae, single-pin attachment bases that get knocked off shelves. The toughened blend takes a flex instead of snapping.

Where it doesn't help: maximum-detail hero pieces. The same elasticity that prevents fracture also slightly rounds sharp geometry. Print a 32mm character's nose in PLA+ vs standard PLA at 0.08mm side by side and you'll see the standard version edge cleaner.

Honest note: we don't sell a separately branded PLA+ at Forgely. Our standard PLA is already compounded for impact resilience, and the gap between it and most "PLA+" labels is smaller than the gap between brands. If you want maximum toughness on a fragile feature, oversize the geometry by 10% in your slicer rather than switching material. Cheaper, works better.

Matte PLA: Best Paint Adhesion and Cleanest Surface

This is the one most mini painters under-use, and it's our top pick for heroes and display pieces.

Matte PLA is regular PLA with a fine matting additive, usually a mineral filler. Two effects matter for minis:

Paint adhesion goes way up. The slightly textured surface gives acrylic paint mechanical grip without needing two primer coats. Contrast and speed paints in particular flow into recesses cleaner because the surface tension behaves more predictably on a textured wall than a glossy one.

Layer lines visually disappear. Even at 0.10mm, diffuse scattering hides the micro-stepping that glossy PLA would broadcast. Your eye reads the surface as continuous instead of striped.

The tradeoff: matte additives are mildly abrasive. A brass nozzle will start showing wear around the 1-2kg mark. Run a hardened steel nozzle if you're printing matte regularly; non-negotiable past the first kilo.

When to skip matte: if you're going to zenithal-prime and airbrush anyway, the matte adhesion bonus is wasted because your primer is doing the work. Save the spool for the brush painters.

Silk PLA: Looks Pretty on the Spool, Mostly a Trap for Minis

Silk PLA's selling point is a metallic sheen straight off the printer. On a spool, it looks like a gradient of liquid metal. On a finished mini, it looks like a striped Christmas ornament.

The reflectivity that makes silk pretty also amplifies every layer line. You're printing in a material specifically engineered to catch light along the print direction. For a flat-walled vase that's a feature. For a 32mm warlord with chainmail, it's the opposite of what you want.

Where silk earns a slot in your filament drawer: hobbyist terrain that won't be painted at all. Display dice towers. Full-color trinkets. Anything where you actually want the printed surface to be the final look.

Verdict for minis: skip it. Print in matte and paint the metallics on. Your silver looks more like silver when you put it there yourself.

Translucent and Natural PLA: The Stained-Glass Trick

This is the most fun use case in the lineup, and it maps cleanly to two Forgely SKUs.

Forgely PLA Natural is uncolored: the base resin with no pigment added. Light passes through thin walls (under 1.5mm), which means you can print a weapon crystal, a lantern globe, or a glowing rune that actually transmits light from an LED or tealight underneath. Paint the interior with thinned washes for color tint without losing translucency.

Forgely PLA Clear pushes this further. It's a deliberately clarified blend for stained-glass-window terrain: cathedral pieces, scenic bases with glowing puddles, sci-fi reactor cores.

The workflow we recommend: print the translucent feature as a separate part, paint the interior surface with thinned inks (a thinned contrast paint over a white interior works well), then glue it into the main mini. Two-part construction beats trying to print a multi-material piece in one go.

Critical setting note: print translucent PLA hotter and slower than your normal profile. Translucency depends on clean layer fusion. Any micro-void between layers acts like a frosted-glass scatterer and kills the effect. 220°C, 20 mm/s on outer walls, 0.10mm layers.

Common Mini-Printing Failures and Which PLA Choice Fixes Them

When a mini comes off the plate looking wrong, most people change material before they should. Here's the order to actually try things.

Fuzzy faces or soft features. Drop your layer height first. Most "blame the PLA" problems are 0.12mm prints that should have been 0.08mm. Brand swap is the last move, not the first.

Stringing between weapon tips. Lower nozzle temp 5°C, then tune retraction. Don't blame the filament until you've ruled out a hot, wet, or fast print. Mini-scale geometry is unforgiving of retraction settings that work fine on larger prints.

Layer lines visible after a coat of primer. This is the actual case for switching material. Move from standard to matte PLA. Don't add more primer coats, which just bury detail.

Banners or antennae snapping at the base. Re-orient the part so the thin section lies flat against the build plate, or thicken the attachment point by 10% in your slicer. PLA+ is rarely the right fix and costs you edge sharpness in exchange.

Storage and Handling: PLA Loses Mini-Detail Quality When Wet

PLA is hygroscopic. Not as bad as PETG or nylon, but bad enough that a spool that's been sitting open for two months in a humid garage will print with micro-bubbling that destroys fine geometry first. Faces, fingers, jewelry. The small stuff goes first, exactly where you can least afford it.

Dry PLA to below 15% RH in a filament dryer at 45°C for six hours before any heirloom print. A dedicated filament dryer earns its money on the first hero mini it saves.
