Which filament to print garage organizers with
Filament choice for garage parts comes down to two questions: how much weight, and how hot does that wall get in July.
PLA works for anything under about 5 lb of load that stays under 120°F. That covers most of this list: hooks, bit indexes, small clips, PPE holders, jar-lid organizers. PETG is the pick for load-bearing parts and anything mounted where afternoon sun hits it. Battery shelves, cord reels, hose reels, bike hangers, router bit blocks, spray-can racks: all PETG. Skip ABS unless you have an enclosure. The fumes are not worth it for a hook.
Color is a small decision that pays back constantly. Safety-yellow or orange for anything PPE-related and small parts you lose against a dark wall. Print settings that matter for garage parts
You don't need boutique settings for shop parts. You need durable-enough, fast-enough, and not-warped.
- Wall count: 4 perimeters minimum for anything holding weight. Infill is the marketing number; walls carry the load.
- Infill: 20% gyroid for light-duty hooks and clips. 40% for battery shelves, cord reels, bike hangers.
- Layer height: 0.2mm is the sweet spot. Going to 0.28mm cuts print time by roughly 30% and no one inspects layer lines on a garage part.
- Nozzle temp: PLA 210–220°C, PETG 235–245°C. Bump 5°C if you see layer separation on tall thin parts like the wrench fan.
- Bed adhesion: PETG on textured PEI without glue is normally fine. If it grabs too hard and chunks the plate, drop bed temp to 70°C.
