How We Tested
We benchmarked three things that affect prints: diameter consistency, color accuracy, and spool fit. Adjective-free, measurable, repeatable.
Diameter tolerance. Every meter of filament off the spool got measured with a Mitutoyo digital caliper, two readings at 90 degrees, averaged. We logged the minimum, maximum, and standard deviation across the full kilogram. A spool that advertises ±0.03 mm needs to hold that tolerance from the outer wrap all the way down to the last few meters near the hub, which is where cheap winding shows up.
Color accuracy. Each color got printed as a 40 mm flat swatch, then compared to a Pantone reference under a D65 daylight lamp using a Datacolor ColorReader. We recorded ΔE values, where anything under 2.0 is indistinguishable to a normal eye and anything over 5.0 is "that is not the color on the website."
Spool fit. We dry-fit every spool in a multi-material loader. Measured outer diameter, inner diameter, and hub width. Logged whether the spool spun freely or rubbed.

Why Tolerance Matters More Than Brand
A ±0.02 mm spool and a ±0.05 mm spool are not the same filament, even if they share the same resin and the same color masterbatch. Cross-sectional area scales with the square of diameter, so a ±0.05 mm swing translates to roughly a 6% change in volumetric flow at the nozzle.
For most prints, your slicer hides that gracefully. Walls get a little thicker or thinner, the part comes out fine, and you never notice. The places it shows up first are vase mode prints (single-wall, no margin for error), small-feature minis (where 0.4 mm features blur into 0.45 mm features), and ironed top surfaces (where flow inconsistency leaves ripples).
Prusa's slicer ships a flow-rate calibration script for exactly this reason. If you have ever printed the single-wall cube tower and measured the wall thickness with calipers, you have already done this calibration. A tight spool means that calibration holds for the whole kilogram. A loose spool means you are recalibrating every roll.
